Giving up smoking is one of the hardest things an adult can do. Nicotine dependence is real, the habit is deeply ingrained, and cold turkey fails the large majority of people who attempt it. This is an honest look at how vaping works as a smoking alternative here, what the research suggests, and how to approach the switch so it actually holds.
This article is not a medical recommendation and vaping is not a licensed stop-smoking treatment. If you want clinical support, your GP can refer you to cessation services available in the UAE.
The short version
- Substitute, don't reduce. Replace every cigarette with a vape from day one. Dual use is the single biggest reason switches fail.
- Start higher than you think. More than 20 a day, start at 50mg nic salt. Too low a strength sends you back to cigarettes within hours.
- Pick a tight MTL pod kit, not a big cloud device. The goal is a cigarette-like draw, not vapour production.
- Start on tobacco or menthol. A familiar flavour shortens the psychological distance between the vape and the cigarette.
- Give it a week. Days one to three are the hardest. Most successful switchers say it feels natural by the end of week one.
Why smokers in the UAE are switching to vaping
The UAE has a substantial adult smoking population. Cigarettes are widely available, socially embedded in certain communities and workplaces, and the mix of stress, heat and long working days reinforces the habit daily. Many smokers here have tried to quit several times on willpower alone, or through patches and gum, and found both either insufficient or impractical.
Vaping addresses the core weakness of most nicotine replacement therapy: it replaces the nicotine but not the ritual. Holding something, bringing it to your mouth, inhaling and exhaling, stepping outside, the social side of it — for many smokers that behavioural conditioning is as strong as the chemical dependence. A patch delivers nicotine through the skin and does nothing for any of it. Gum replaces the nicotine but the experience bears no resemblance to smoking.
Vaping replicates the ritual almost completely while removing combustion, which is the source of the most harmful compounds in cigarette smoke. The physical action is similar, the nicotine delivery works, and inhaling and exhaling vapour is close enough to smoking that the transition feels manageable rather than like deprivation.
What the evidence actually says
We'd rather be accurate than oversell this.
Reviews from Public Health England — whose functions now sit with the UK Health Security Agency and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities — concluded that vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking combustible tobacco. Tar, carbon monoxide and the other products of combustion are absent from vapour produced by a properly functioning device. That does not mean vaping is without risk, but the harm reduction case for smokers who switch rests on a reasonable body of evidence.
On cessation specifically, Cochrane's living review of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation finds that nicotine e-cigarettes help more people quit than nicotine replacement therapy does, and rates that comparison as high-certainty evidence. Individual studies have been more mixed, and results vary a lot between people.
What runs through all of it is one finding: the best outcomes belong to smokers who make a complete switch, not to those who dual-use. Continuing to smoke while also vaping is the most common pattern among smokers who try vaping, and the one least likely to end in actually quitting. If your goal is to stop smoking, aim for complete substitution rather than supplementation. The NHS guidance on using e-cigarettes to stop smoking gives the same advice.
The four rules of a switch that holds
The transition works far better approached deliberately than casually. These four are the framework we give every switching smoker who asks.
Replace every cigarette
Substitution, not reduction. For every cigarette you'd normally smoke, pick up the vape instead. Don't try to taper cigarettes while vaping — that keeps you in dual use and makes the habit far harder to break. Give yourself two to four weeks at full substitution before you judge whether it's working.
Get the strength right on day one
The most common reason a switch fails is picking a nicotine strength too low to answer the craving. A heavy smoker on 20mg will feel under-satisfied and reach for a cigarette within hours. Start higher than feels cautious; you can always step down later.
Choose a cigarette-like device
High-power box mods that produce big clouds are built for experienced vapers who enjoy the performance side. They're the wrong starting point here. What you want is a tight MTL draw, a compact device, and reliable nic salt delivery.
Give it a week before deciding
The first few days are rarely smooth. Vapour feels different from smoke, the nicotine arrives with a different character, and the association with a cigarette takes time to transfer. Most successful switchers say it feels natural by the end of week one. If days one and two are hard, that's normal.
Which nicotine strength should you start at?
Match it to how much you actually smoke. As a general guide: more than 20 cigarettes a day, start at 50mg nic salt. Ten to 20 a day, 35mg. Fewer than 10 a day, 20mg is usually enough. These are starting points — adjust up if you find yourself still craving cigarettes, down if the nicotine feels too strong.

The right device for a switching smoker
Not all devices suit a smoker making the switch. What you want is the opposite of what an experienced hobbyist wants: a tight mouth-to-lung draw, a compact body, and reliable nic salt delivery — not wattage, airflow control or cloud production.
A refillable pod kit also works out considerably cheaper than a disposable habit, and it's the only route to controlling your own strength later on, when reducing nicotine becomes the goal.
RefillableMTL pod kit
Uwell Caliburn G2
The Caliburn line is the most consistently recommended kit for smokers switching, and it earns that. The draw is tight and smooth, closely replicating the sensation of pulling on a cigarette, and the mesh coil delivers nic salt quickly enough that the satisfaction curve feels familiar to someone used to a cigarette. It's compact, sits in the hand the way a cigarette does, fills easily, and the coil holds up well under heavy switching use. Pair it with a tobacco or menthol nic salt.

Which flavour should you start on?
Flavour choice has a real effect on whether a switch holds, and the reasoning is psychological rather than technical.
Start with tobacco or menthol
The association between a familiar taste and the act of smoking is stronger than most people expect. Switching to a fruit-flavoured vape while simultaneously trying to stop smoking asks your brain to make two adjustments at once: replace the cigarette with a device, and replace the tobacco taste with something entirely unfamiliar. Starting on a tobacco or menthol profile keeps one thing constant while the other changes.
The profiles that work best for switchers here are classic tobacco (clean and warm, the closest approximation to a cigarette), Virginia tobacco (lighter and slightly sweeter, popular with people who smoked lighter brands), tobacco menthol (warmth with a cool finish, for menthol cigarette smokers), and straight menthol (sharp and uncomplicated, for anyone who wants to leave tobacco flavour behind without jumping to fruit).
Moving to fruit later
Once the switch is established — usually after two to four weeks without cigarettes — fruit flavours become a genuinely enjoyable next step rather than a disorienting change at a hard moment. Many ex-smokers find tobacco profiles stop feeling necessary around then. That's a good sign: it means the cigarette association is weakening.
Our bottled e-liquid range changes regularly. Tell our WhatsApp team which cigarette brand you smoke and we'll tell you which tobacco or menthol nic salts we currently hold that come closest — a faster route than guessing from product photos.
What it costs against a pack a day
Rough monthly figures for a 20-a-day smoker in the UAE. Your actual spend depends on how heavily you vape, so treat these as a shape rather than a quote.
- Smoking, one pack a day
- AED 540–750
- High-puff disposables
- AED 270–450
- Refillable pod kit + bottled juice
- AED 100–160
The FTA sets a floor of AED 18 per pack of 20; mainstream brands sit closer to AED 22–25 after 100% excise and 5% VAT.
Assumes a 20,000-puff device lasting a former pack-a-day smoker three to five days. Convenient, but the most expensive way to vape long term.
Plus a one-off device cost of around AED 130. This is where the real saving is, and why we push switchers toward a refillable kit once the first week is behind them.
One recent change worth knowing: since 1 September 2026 a minimum excise price of AED 1 per millilitre applies to e-liquids in the UAE. It affects bottled juice pricing across the market, and the figures above already reflect current shelf prices. Vaping still works out meaningfully cheaper than a pack-a-day habit — see our UAE regulations and compliance page for the wider picture.
Stepping nicotine down over time
Switching off cigarettes is an achievement on its own. Reducing nicotine afterwards, if that's your goal, is a separate and much longer process — and one vaping makes more manageable than any other nicotine replacement approach, because you control the number in the bottle.
A common and effective pattern is to drop one level every four to eight weeks, giving your body time to adjust at each stage. For someone who started at 50mg, that might look like this.
| Timing | Strength | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Months 1–2 | 50mg | Full substitution. Establishing the vaping habit and breaking the cigarette association. |
| Months 3–4 | 35mg | First reduction. Most people find this step manageable with little adjustment. |
| Months 5–6 | 20mg | A noticeable drop. Some vape slightly more often at this stage before settling. |
| Months 7–9 | 10mg | Approaching low dependency. Bottled nic salt only — you need a refillable kit by here. |
| Month 10+ | 3mg or 0mg | Minimal to zero nicotine. Plenty of people keep vaping at 0mg for the ritual alone. |
This is not a rigid timeline and there's no obligation to reduce at any particular pace. Some people are comfortable at 20mg indefinitely and feel no need to go lower. Others move through it quickly. The point is that vaping gives you control over the process in a way cigarettes never did.
Common mistakes, and what to do instead
The mistake
Choosing a nicotine strength that's too low.
Do this instead
Start higher than you think you need. Under-satisfaction is what sends people back to cigarettes in the first 48 hours. You can step down once the switch is established.
The mistake
Smoking cigarettes alongside vaping.
Do this instead
Commit to full substitution and clear cigarettes out of your home, car and desk. Dual use is the most common reason a switch never completes.
The mistake
Giving up after a rough first few days.
Do this instead
Push through the first week before drawing any conclusions. Days two and three are the hardest by a distance, and they are not representative of what vaping feels like at week three.
The mistake
Buying a device that's too complicated.
Do this instead
Start with a simple MTL pod kit. A box mod with a sub-ohm tank as a first device sets you up for a confusing and probably unsuccessful switch. Move to advanced kit later if you want to.
The mistake
Not having the device with you.
Do this instead
Keep it charged, keep a spare pod or bottle handy, and carry it exactly the way you used to carry your cigarettes. A vape that's out of reach when the craving lands is no use at all.
Common questions
Is vaping better than smoking for giving up cigarettes in the UAE?
Many smokers find vaping a more effective and sustainable alternative than patches or gum, mainly because it replicates the ritual as well as the nicotine delivery. Cochrane's review rates nicotine e-cigarettes as more effective than nicotine replacement therapy for cessation. That said, vaping is not a guaranteed stop-smoking treatment and results vary significantly between individuals.
What nicotine strength should a heavy smoker start at?
A heavy smoker — more than 20 cigarettes a day — should start at 50mg nic salt. That's the highest standard strength available in the UAE market and gives the fastest, strongest delivery available from a standard pod kit.
How long does it take to stop wanting cigarettes?
Most switchers report the urge to smoke a cigarette reducing significantly within the first one to two weeks of consistent full-substitution vaping. The psychological association takes longer to fade but typically weakens steadily across the first month.
Can I vape and smoke at the same time while I transition?
Technically yes, but practically it significantly reduces your chances of giving up. Keeping cigarettes as a backup maintains the habit rather than breaking it. Aim for complete substitution as quickly as you can manage.
Which flavour is best for someone who has just switched?
Tobacco or menthol nic salt. A familiar flavour reduces the psychological distance between the vape and the cigarette it's replacing, and makes the first two weeks noticeably more comfortable than starting on fruit.
Is vaping cheaper than smoking in the UAE?
For most smokers who make a full switch to a refillable pod kit and bottled nic salt, yes — meaningfully so. A pack-a-day habit runs roughly AED 540 to 750 a month at current UAE prices, while a refillable setup typically costs AED 100 to 160 a month in e-liquid after a one-off device purchase. Disposables sit in between and are the most expensive way to vape long term.
