Open any vape shop and you're hit with dozens of brands, hundreds of flavours, and a wall of terminology — puff counts, nic salts, MTL draw, coil resistance, VG/PG. None of it is intuitive when you just want something simple that works. This is the version without all that.
Vaping is for adult smokers. If you don't smoke, the healthiest option is not to start — the harm reduction case for vaping is an argument about replacing cigarettes, and it doesn't apply where there's nothing to replace. Products are restricted to 18 and over in the UAE.
Two questions matter for a beginner: what should I buy first, and how do I use it? Everything below answers those. No unnecessary technical detail, no assumed knowledge.
The one rule: start simple
Resist the temptation to jump into advanced equipment. Variable wattage, sub-ohm tanks, rebuildable atomisers — they all exist, and none of them are right for someone who has never vaped.
A disposable
Zero setup, zero technical knowledge, minimal outlay. You find out quickly whether you enjoy vaping, whether the flavour suits you, and whether the strength feels right — without having spent much on equipment you might never use again.
A refillable pod kit
Once a disposable has confirmed vaping works for you, this is the natural next move. Running cost drops sharply, flavour stays more consistent, and you choose your own strength — including lowering it later.
Skipping step one is the most common way people waste money here. A pod kit you bought before knowing whether you like vaping is an expensive drawer ornament.
Step one: choosing your first disposable
A disposable is a sealed device, pre-filled and pre-charged at the factory. There's nothing to do but take it out of the packaging and inhale — no buttons, no settings, no filling, no charging. It activates automatically when you draw on it. When the liquid runs out or the battery dies, you dispose of it responsibly and either buy another or move to a refillable kit.
Three things matter for a first purchase, in this order.
Brand reliability. The UAE market contains both quality products and cheap imitations, and a bad first experience caused by a substandard device is one of the most common reasons people write vaping off before giving it a fair go. Stick to established brands from verified sellers. Our UAE regulations and compliance page explains what to look for.
Nicotine strength. This decides how strong the hit feels, and getting it wrong in either direction ruins the experience — too low and you'll feel nothing, too high and it'll be harsh and unpleasant. Most disposables here come at 20mg or 50mg. We cover which to pick below.
Flavour. Entirely personal, but there are some guidelines that make a better first choice likely.

View Tugboat Master 20mgA note on the big ones. You'll see devices advertised at 20,000, 30,000, even 45,000 puffs, often at 50mg. They're excellent value per puff and they're the right call for a heavy ex-smoker — but they are not a first vape. Buying 25,000 puffs of something you might not like is the opposite of starting simple.
What to avoid: unbranded devices at unusually low prices. Counterfeits circulate in the UAE market, and a bad experience with a fake is a common reason people give up before giving vaping a fair chance. Buy from a verified seller.
Which nicotine strength should you start at?
This is the most consequential choice you'll make as a beginner. Match it to your background, not to what sounds impressive.
Heavy smoker — a pack a day or more
You need enough nicotine to answer cravings used to a significant daily intake. Starting lower is the most common reason a switch from smoking fails in the first 48 hours.
Moderate smoker — around half a pack
Strong enough to satisfy without being overwhelming. If in doubt at this level, start at 20mg and go up rather than the reverse.
Light or social smoker
Sufficient for a few cigarettes a day. Anything higher will likely feel too strong and put you off.
Never smoked
Start at 20mg and be cautious — nicotine affects people without a tolerance far more strongly. Take two or three slow puffs, then wait a couple of minutes and see how you feel before continuing. If 20mg is too much, we carry lower.
If even 20mg feels strong, the KIEF King at 3mg is well below standard disposable strengths.
Which flavour should you start on?
If you've smoked: start with tobacco or menthol. These are familiar profiles that connect vaping to the sensory experience you already know, which makes the switch feel natural rather than like swapping one thing for something unrecognisable. Fruit becomes much easier to enjoy once you're settled.
If you haven't smoked: fruit and ice profiles are the most immediately enjoyable when you've no reference point. Watermelon ice, mango, blueberry ice and peach are consistently the most popular first flavours here.
Either way, skip the sweet stuff initially. Heavy dessert and candy flavours can feel overwhelming on first use. A single clean fruit with a light menthol finish is the most accessible starting point for most people.

Step two: moving to a pod kit
Once a disposable or two has confirmed vaping works for you, a starter pod kit is the sensible next move if you're going to vape regularly. Running cost drops a lot and the experience improves — flavour stays more consistent because you're putting in fresh coils rather than riding one device to the end.
A pod kit is a reusable device with a refillable pod. You fill it with the e-liquid of your choice and replace the pod or coil when it wears out. The learning curve is genuinely small — filling takes under a minute once you've done it once.

Uwell Caliburn G2
Draw-activated, so there are no buttons to press and nothing to configure — you inhale and it works, exactly like a disposable. The pod fills in seconds, the coil holds up well under daily use, and the tight draw is close to the sensation of a cigarette, which is why it's the standard recommendation for ex-smokers. Slim enough for any pocket, quiet, and modest in vapour output. This is the one device we'd point a beginner to.

Using a pod kit for the first time
-
Charge it fully first
Most modern kits charge over USB-C. A full charge takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, and the indicator light will tell you when it's done. Do this before anything else.
-
Fill the pod
Find the fill port on the side or bottom — it's sealed with a small rubber plug. Pull the plug out, insert your e-liquid bottle nozzle, and squeeze slowly until the pod reaches the maximum line. Push the plug back in firmly and wipe off any excess.
-
Wait five minutes
Don't skip this. See below — it's the single most important thing on this page.
-
Take slow, gentle draws
Draw-activated devices need no button. Inhale slowly and steadily rather than sharply — two to three seconds is comfortable for most beginners, and gives better flavour and nicotine delivery than a long hard pull.
-
Replace the pod when flavour degrades
When it starts tasting burnt or noticeably worse, the coil is done. With normal daily use, expect one to two weeks from a pod or coil.
Wait five minutes after filling. Every time.
This lets the e-liquid fully soak into the coil. Vaping straight after filling burns a dry coil, and the resulting taste is genuinely horrible — it's the most common beginner mistake and it puts people off the device permanently. Five minutes of waiting prevents it completely. Set a timer if you have to.
What it costs to start
Current prices from our store. Product pages are the source of truth if anything has moved since.
| Setup | What you need | From |
|---|---|---|
| Try it out | One 20mg disposable, 3,500 puffs | AED 40 |
| Longer first device | One 20mg disposable, 10,000 puffs | AED 35 |
| Pod kit setup | Caliburn G2 plus a 60ml bottle of e-liquid | AED 180 |
| Monthly, on a pod kit | Roughly two 60ml bottles plus replacement coils | AED 100–150 |
The pod kit costs more up front and considerably less to run. For anyone vaping daily it pays for itself inside the first month or two against a disposable habit — which is the whole argument for making the move once you know you're going to stick with it.
Common questions
What's the easiest vape to use for a beginner?
A disposable — there's no setup at all. Among refillable kits, a draw-activated pod kit like the Caliburn G2 is the most beginner-friendly, because there are no buttons or settings and filling takes under a minute.
Should I start with a disposable or go straight to a pod kit?
Start with a disposable. Confirm you actually enjoy vaping and have found a strength and flavour that work before investing in equipment. It's a small cost that saves you from buying a kit you don't end up using.
How long does a disposable last?
It depends on the rated puff count and how heavily you vape. A 3,500-puff device suits moderate use for several days; a 10,000-puff device lasts proportionally longer. Bear in mind rated puff counts are lab figures and real-world use runs well below them.
What flavour should I choose first?
Ex-smokers should try tobacco or menthol first — the familiarity makes the transition easier. Non-smokers usually get on best with fruit and ice profiles. Watermelon ice, mango and blueberry ice are the most popular first flavours here.
Is vaping cheaper than smoking in the UAE?
For moderate to heavy users who move to a pod kit with bottled nic salt, generally yes — the ongoing e-liquid cost is well below an equivalent tobacco spend at current UAE cigarette prices. Disposables sit in between and are the most expensive way to vape long term.
What if my pod tastes burnt?
Either the coil needs replacing, or the pod wasn't primed before first use. Always wait five minutes after filling a new pod, and replace the pod or coil as soon as flavour starts degrading rather than pushing through it.
